doors on

So the fibre door is well on its way, I'll be taking down my boxes of 'spare stuff' tuesday night to complete the door and line the inside. All of the damaged fibre will clad the out side too, Joe Finch sent me some pics of a soda kiln he was working on and he used fibre outside too, a novel notion to me so we'll use it as extra insulation.

  1. Exciting stuff! I've got fibre on the outside of my kiln too although it's rendered over with clay and vermiculite. Looking forward to seeing it all happen.

  2. From what i can find vermiculite is like grog? I intend to mix up another batch of slop consisting of stoneware slip, fireclay & medium grog to cover the roof with a slurry over chicken wire to hold everything in place. We're trying to fill up all the gaps that appeared last time we fired..

  3. I'm not quite sure what its composition is, but it's a lightweight flake that is used in insulation. I got it from the local builders merchant. I made a bit of a mess of my kiln roof. I used square edged bricks instead of arch bricks so I mortared the gaps using sand and china clay with the bricks on edge over a former. It was fine until we took the former out and realised that we hadn't got the deges of the bricks close enough together. As a result, bits of sand drop into the kiln every firing and occasionally land on the pots. I must rebuild it sometime but I don't know when that'll happen. Have good day down there

  4. By the way it'd be cool to see some pictures of you doing your thing so I can put a face to the words

  5. oh bummer about the sand and bits getting into the firing but it is such a chore getting that roof to fit def need to be inspired to do it. We actually use fibre inside the roof too so we won't have that happening. I'm in the shots of raku & also in the olders posts video of raku using the tongs and in the pirate shots wearing the white shirt. I will however endeavour to get someone to take some photos today,.
