pop...pop...pop...the sequel

Ooops kiln carnage, as you can see one tile survived, that must have been the bone dry one.... oh well.. inspired and moving on , and here's some lovely slip to hover over....I've made a couple of quite large tiles and looking forward to seeing them emerge..

I will glaze fire the shards as some great research can still be done with what i have...some ink for the white on white and i want to see how the glazes come up on the slips too.

Bonus!.. i found some bottles at the club tuesday night i must have thrown them ages ago.. covered in plastic and well dry now but they only need a little cleaning up on the bases. So a kiln clean up and another raku firing shortly, yey!!

  1. ouch! But what can you do but move along.
I am on pins and needles every time I fire tiles.
Even though I wait weeks to let them dry- I still think--- will they all make it through.

  2. ye if i'd had a burner and hose handy i would have started with that...now i know wood is so upredictable..all of the large tiles i now fire on their edge and not a crack so far!

  3. Bummer, that's quite an explosion, how does the on end firing work for the tiles do they warp? does your clay have a lot of grog in it? What size are those large tiles? by the way love the thick white slip you are using. I am working on one odd shaped one tht will be 21 x 7 or so and wondering how it will do when I fire it.

  4. hey linda yep this is raku clay and heavily grogged..
i've been bisque firing them on their side. for space reasons mostly plus student work i fire this way too and no cracks yet...
glaze fire with these ive only fired them flat on some fine grog. 'pre fired crushed clay particles'
the iron in this body comes out well at cone 6 and would mark the kiln shelf without it..the big ones would be 35cm x 25cm ish maybe a bit bigger..at cone 6 they have slumped flat even if i have curved them while making..i usually stick some tools under each end to get some shape..

  7. Hi Ang, thanks for the info; I have one tile that puckered up on one side and I am hoping it will lay flat in the glaze firing. I try to use porcelain sand under the big flat pieces, we shall see how they do.
