ahhh the wood firing....i'm hooked..

so here we go, roasted toasted smoked and burned and that's just me!!

a lil vid from todays action, thanks massively to anna i think she did all the hard work!! only realised when i was looking at the vids....whoopsie!

and thanks jess for the images they're nicely integrated and also hey trace i think this was your raku glaze the one on the right at the end and the other was anna's possibly needs to be a bit thicker app. but lovely all the same..

so on naming the new kiln i'd like your votes we so far have...

1. the leachenberg - as the kiln is modelled on a raku kiln by simon leach
2. the red baron - possibly more to do with charlie brown than any aircraft
3. the stefan-ang - after the kiln maker that annas kiln is designed by

and of course any suggestions for naming the lil-rocket are welcome...

and just a little ad on with some firing details,

i had about 15 pieces in there.. and used a wooden crate that was lying around in the car park for fuel, I used just the planks cut length ways plus a couple of hand fulls of twigs and branches that created quite a bit of smoke although that could have been my over zealous stoking.. the crate wood burned more efficiently..the firing was 2 1/2 hours and was prob done in about 2hrs though, a lot of my shell glaze had come off creating some very black work, a bit over baked perhaps.. the pyro read 950C when we decided to crack the kiln..

  5. Wow, what a lot of work taking all the pieces out and putting it in the cans, great resulst sand colors. the kiln seems very efficient. How much wood did you end up using? Where did you insert the pyrometer, I didn't notice, great video and kiln design.

  6. What a kiln! A work of art and that's before the pots go in. Maybe it should be called the Red Baron as it looks like it could fly to me. Or how about 'BOOM-meringue'. (Sorry, couldn't resist- and I hope it doesn't)!

  7. hi linda, yeh i didn't prep enough bins which left anna running during the unloading!! i had about 15 pieces in there.. used a wooden crate that was lying around in the car park just the planks plus a couple of hand fulls of twigs and branches the crate wood burned more efficiently..that was 2 1/2 hours prob done in about 2hrs though a bit over baked..the pyro was on the left side above the middle..

  9. Girrrrlllll, we live too far apart. We could have a bunch of fun together with the pyrotechnics!
Love the kiln, pieces look great! I like lil rocket for a name. It looked like you were lighting a stick of dynomite when you fired it up :)
Great video, I know you must be happy with the results.

  10. ahh yes trace we do you'd have loved hanging out for the day it was rather cool doing such a test run I think next challenge will be to try the gas and see what temp i can get it to..i do like the idea of the wood though and got some nice lustres from it..ya like my fuse!! hehehe have you seen the vid where the guy makes pots blowing them up with fireworks? brilliant!!

  11. The Red Baron, a great name for a kiln with a barrel like fuselage. Really impressive result, and most interesting to see. An old fellow like me would probably end up putting the whole thing up on a couple of layers of concrete blocks just to make it easier to stoke and to unload, but you must have younger knees! You must be really pleased with how things went, I'm sure that small wood fired kilns made from new materials have a lot of potential.

  12. hey peter, yeh i think the whole firing went quite well i was only a lil stuck at the end when the temp seemed to stall but the poor kiln was full of ashes so no more room!..knees perhaps but my back is sore today, thats a great idea putting in up a bit higher..pleased!.. :)
I am going to push it to see what temp i can get it to with gas soon...

  14. hey congrats on that little monster. love those black and white pots you got out of there. as far as nicknames, lil' rocket sounded good when you referred to it in passing but how about "juju chamber"?

  15. Very cool Ang. That's a great little kiln. I think you could have baked a pizza or two there at end after the pots came out!

  16. hi judy, it ran very well! its neck and neck with 'lil rocket' and 'the red baron' at the mo..

hey jim, ta man, the black and whites are very black this time but still have great markings..does 'juju' have any meaning there a sweet here!!

hiya ron, hahaa pizza that would be great for a night firing! it was very hot in there still..

  17. hey ang, well done, another kiln construction masterpiece! The video is great but I can't work out why anna and tracey run away from you so often! Lovely pots too, I think red baron, then you can paint a little snoopy on the side.

  19. I now have my copy of "Shards" so here is the info I promised:-
Jane Spray saw the work of Tozan Wada and Hiroaki Wada on a website (not quoted).Their pottery is at Amagasaki, 40 mins train ride from Kyoto.
The potters fire their work in Oizumi,in Yamanashi (3 hours drive from Tokyo)
Hope that is of use to you
