under pressure

Today I've been fitting all the pieces together lining everything up and recutting pieces that are too warped. The weathers been crazy hot and windy hence the pieces are drying faster than i would like making working on warm days difficult. As you can see i've grabbed everything within reach to weigh down the tiles and kevin brought in some weights for me too.

There's some lovely green stuff happening as well and you can see the lines in the design are coming together, I'm anxious to get all the pieces cut now so that settling can occur in moisture content and colouring can begin..

  1. Wow, how do you keep track of these pieces ? Do you turn them over during the drying process.

  2. Hi michael, I have a full scale 'pattern' that i use to cut out from and pre firing with my other cafe tiled tables i have numbered them otherwise it does mess with my head, this table however will be fully coloured so that may help with the pattern.. and the clay in turned when rolling out so I just keep them under weights while drying..

  4. Interesting question - I was wondering myself if you number them or write a specific color on each piece.

I made a large texture slab the other day to use for future textures with the ginkgo leaves from my garden before they all dried up for the season. Despite slow drying an weighting it down, it cracked in half. I'm still firing it, but won't have one continuous texture piece.

  5. hi guys,, I can imagine autumn & winter would be frustrating for clay working. Maybe we could come up with a prototype studio that is clad with those solar panels cynthia was researching!

Cynthia have you ever tried paper clay its very durable for large scale making.

I'll grab some pics of my poor 'pattern" when the job is finished it's got so much scrawl written all over it, total mess..

  6. How about me and Doug send you a container full of pots. you put them out to dry for a day and then send it back.
I'm sure it would be quicker.

  7. actually a container would probably be a great drying cupboard. Do you have those popping up? people are using them here for storage on their property..
